The University of Manchester Swim Team is able to cater for the needs and requirements of every swimmer. The pool is split to allow recreational and competitive swimming to take place at the same time. The Recreational and Competitive squads train two and three times a week respectively. Competitive and recreational swimming both take place on Monday and Thursday evenings with an extra competitive session on Wednesday afternoons. The competitive sessions are split to enable sprinters and distance swimmers to train for their specific events but there are also combined sessions to work on fitness. The recreational sessions are designed to focus on fitness, stamina and technique and have a more relaxed approach to training. All sessions are coached at a high level to ensure the true potential of everyone is seen and utilised.
All pool training takes place at the Manchester Aquatics Centre on Booth Street, just off Oxford Road. The Training Pool is downstairs at MAC out of the way of the public, and the Swim Team has sole use of this pool on Monday and Thursdays. The Wednesday sessions take place in the Main Pool upstairs at MAC. This is during a public swimming session; however we have 2 lanes set aside for exclusive use.
The Swim Team has relatively few coached training sessions during the week. Our members are encouraged to train on their own or in groups during public sessions to keep up their fitness throughout the year. If you are going to train in a public session remember to take your university library card and ask for a student discount. An informal training session usually takes place on Sunday mornings which all members are welcome to attend.
If you require more training to keep you going, we work closely with The City of Manchester Aquatics Team who are also based at the MAC. We still allow swimmers to train with them and compete with us. There is a cross over so that we keep in close contact with all our swimmers.
Check the Club Calendar for accurate list of dates of sessions (cancelled sessions will be deleted from the calendar), and Locations Map for directions to all venues.
Notes
Strength and ConditioningA select number of competitive swimmers are coached by our Strength and Conditioning coach, Nick Jones. The programme is specifically designed for swimmers by targeting and working on specific muscle groups to boost our performance. Training takes place once a week in the Power Room of the Sugden Centre in small groups to allow a close relationship to develop between the coach and the swimmer. The Power Room is an extremely valuable resource to the swim team and therefore requires 100% attendance.Land TrainingCircuit training takes place once a week in the Conference Room of the Armitage Centre just behind Richmond Park in Fallowfield. It is a free session to all fully paid-up members of the swim team and is a great way to start the weekend. All the exercises are based around core stability which is vital for swimming. We have a great laugh with a friendly atmosphere to bring the whole team together.Session costs
