Report

SWIMMERS PROVE THEY ARE EQUIPPED FOR THE LONG HAUL by Lucy Lloyd-Roach and Roger Barnes

On February 10th, twenty-five of the University of Manchester's elite swimmers and an entourage of old-school members left the city to go to the BUSA Long Course Championships in Sheffield.

Following the success of the BUSA Short Course Swimming Championships in November we approached the long course equivalent (swum in a 50m rather than a 25m pool) with great anticipation.

The short Friday evening session is usually a good indication of how well the weekend's swimming will go and distance specialists Erica Brown and Dave Proud did not disappoint finishing 6th and 4th in their respective events. Both men's and women's Freestyle relay teams then qualified comfortably for their finals, in University record times, rounding off a promising start to the weekend.

It seemed that our traditional Friday night preparations had set the team up well for Saturday's swims as the day's heats produced eight finalists, which is our most successful Saturday to date. Everybody swam well particularly Abi Tetley who qualified second for the 50m Freestyle, and Liz Hall competing in her last BUSA event.

The Saturday's final session began well with Jill Nesbitt finishing 5th in the 200m Freestyle. Good swims followed from Graeme Smith (200m Freestyle), Lucy Lloyd-Roach (5th, 50m Backstroke) and Katie Stanier (400 I.M.).

Tetley as usual was on fire producing stunning back-to-back final swims in the 100m Butterfly and the 50m Freestyle. In her second swim of the evening, the 50m Freestyle, she swam a qualifying time for the British Championships and missed out on a medal by just twelve hundredths of a second.

The Freestyle relay finals provided a fitting climax to our most successful Saturday ever. Both teams again smashed University records with the men finishing 5th, their highest position ever. The women's relay team consisting of Tetley, Lloyd-Roach, Jill Nesbitt and Marie Jones, got off to a flying start with Tetley leading the team out with another British Championship qualifying swim. The rest of the team swam out of their skins to finally end three years of 4th place relay finishes by coming 3rd, Manchester's first ever relay medal.

On Sunday morning the majority of swimmers were slightly bleary-eyed but never the less attacked the morning's swims with enthusiasm and were even more successful than Saturday with a representative in two-thirds of the afternoon's finals. Some swims that deserve a mention from the heats are Matthew Moody (100m Breaststroke) who cruelly missed out on a final place and Katie Loker and Becky Tremlett who swam their last BUSA swims for the University.

Nesbitt yet again set the standard for the final session of the weekend with another 5th in the 200m Butterfly. Tetley despite not feeling 100%, missed out on a medal in the 100m Freestyle by a mere four hundredths of a second. Further good performances followed from Rachel Bates competing in her first BUSA final (50m Butterfly), Jones (200m IM), Smith (100m Freestyle), James Murray (50m Butterfly) and Lloyd-Roach (100m Backstroke).

The weekend concluded with the men's and women's medley teams who set new University records, finishing in 7th and 5th respectively. A good way to finish our most successful weekend ever, breaking into the top five for the first time and the women retaining second place behind the unstoppable Loughborough.

Thanks must go to Katie Loker for all her hard work in organising the weekend, Coach Tim Konowalik, our three bus drivers Lucy Lloyd-Roach, Graeme Smith, and AU Chair Jeannie Ivanov who now fully appreciates the technicalities of swimming!
